This course traces the history of the Jewish people from its origins in the prehistoric Middle East to the development of Rabbinic Judaism.  An attempt will be made to contextualize the biblical, Second Temple  and Rabbinic developments within broader regional trends.

HIST 3411T    History of Jewish Music        M/Th 11:10-12:25
This course will cover the full range of Jewish music history from its biblical origins, through the development of cantillation and modes in the medieval period, to Salomone Rossi’s Baroque settings of the liturgy, to the synthesis of  Western style and traditional modal traditions in the 19th century, to the development of Eastern European cantorial music and Klezmer and more recent trends in the United States and Israel.
